Shopping Small in Timonium

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

When we opened the doors of our first shop in Timonium in 2002, we weren’t alone in the small business community and we never will be! The area is home to a number of great places to shop, eat and sweat locally so that when you spend, you’re putting your money right back in the local economy. (Click here to read Josh’s take on the importance of shopping local).

This list does not even begin to cover the full extent of the many amazing, small local businesses in the Timonium area but here are just a few of our favorites.

What other small businesses do you love to support in the Timonium area? Please share your own favorites in the comments below.

Shop

Lily Trotters – This brand of fashionable compression socks was started in the Baltimore area by a group of local women. When you purchase a pair, you’re supporting your feet and local business at the same time!

The Natural The self-proclaimed Mom & Pop Shop has just about every nurition supplement you could need, in addition to great vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan and raw options for the health-conscious eater. Stau tuned for the grand re-opening at its new location.

Jeppi Nut & Candy Company This wholesale and retail company started in Baltimore in 1884. Unfortunately, the storefront and plant in Timonium suffered from a fire in March 2017 and as of now, are up and running online and open to be re-opened in the area shortly. Grab your favorite nuts and candies before heading off to a night at the Yard!

Spa in the Valley – In 1990, Debbie Nazelrod opened her first salon in Baltimore. Now, Spa in Valley is one of a few locations across Maryland offering day spa and salon services. Stop by next time you are in need of some pampering!

Eat/Drink

Nalley FreshAfter being diagnosed with cancer, Greg Nalley was motivated to start his first restaurant in Baltimore. Eventually due to this success and some additional experience in the industry, the concept for Nalley Fresh was born and the Hunt Valley location was the send on to launch. Now, there is an even closer option right in Timonium. Nalley continues to give back to the local community by employing individuals with special needs and those who have struggled to get back on their feet.

Ryleigh’s Oyster If you’ve done a pub run from the Timonium store with us, you’ve ended up at Ryleigh’s Oyster in Hunt Valley (If you haven’t yet, join us the third Wednesday of every month for a fun run and a drink on the house). We love the outdoor seating and the delicious appetizers! The first Ryleigh’s location opened its doors the same year we did – 2002.

Hightopps Backstage Grille Another favorite of our training groups, Hightopp’s a great place to grab a happy hour drink or enjoy special nights – like poker or open mic. In the summer, the large outdoor patio makes for a great spot to hang out. Although it started in Fells Point, the owners of this local spots have always been Timonium residents.

Michael’s Café – This restaurant has been around Timonium since the Dellis family opened it in 1984. Stop by to enjoy live music every Friday night or dig into the secret family recipe crab cakes.

Zia’s – Chef and resident juicing/raw food/vegan expert Daniela Troia opened Zia’s Cafe in Towson in 2005. We love that Zia’s sister food stand PlantBar is in Belvedere Square near our VITA location and is opening in Harbor Point near our Fells Point store. From raw food wraps to bright juices, there are lots of great healthy options!

Baltimore Coffee and Tea We’re lucky to have both a Baltimore Coffee and Tea shop and the roasting plant right in Timonium! With coffee and tea blends for the Ravens, Orioles and all your favorite Baltimore neighborhoods, it’s a great place to grab a cup of joe or pick up a Maryland-themed gift.

Towson Hot Bagels We have two of these great bagel shops close by – the original near the Towson circle and the newer Ridgely Shopping Center location in Timonium. Both serve the great doughy circles that are a favorite of families popping by for weekend brunch and us, when we cater breakfast for our hungry runners at the store. Started by four cousins, THB is a local success.

Café Troia – Owned by the Troia family, yes same last name and family of Daniela Troia of Zia’s (this is Smalltimore after all), Cafe Troia opened in 1986. The Italian family still serves every meal from scratch.

La Cakerie – Chef Jason Hisley has been featured on Food Network baking competition shows including Cupcake Wars and Cake Wars. Now, you can eat the treats for yourself when you visit the store front in Towson.

Bagel Works – A graduate of Towson University, the owner started out as a baker at Bagel Works after college. Now, he still makes the bagels from scratch for a great local bite!

Sweat

Sweat Performance Why not start things off with a business that has sweat in it’s name? The trainers here will motivate you to make the most of your functional training experience. You’ll get the elite athlete experience as you push sleds and throw medicine balls throughout the open space-style gym. It’s the perfect way to supplement your running routine!

Barrevolution Owned by the amazing Lara Custer, Barrevolution’s original studio near another local spot on our list, HighTopps, opened the same time as our Belvedere Square location. Since then, we’ve been lucky to form a partnership with Lara and the rest of her staff. When you step into the studio – you’ll be treated like a long-time friend, whether you’ve been there since day one or are taking class for the first time.

EA Fit Club We’re lucky to have EA Fit Club just up the road from us in Timonium. Eric Atherton is a force to be reckoned with – he’ll make it work hard during his bootcamp style classes while still managing to be one of the friendliest people we’ve ever met. Check out his club for a great cross training experience.

SDK PilatesWhen they’re not running the hills of Thornton, you might catch Coach Dawn’s training group taking pilates classes here for extra credit core workouts. There are plenty of options for everyone from beginners to those experienced with pilates equipment classes. As a retired medical doctor, owner Stepahnie Kafondek knows how to strength and heal the body with movement.

Yoga on York A hidden gem in Towson, this tiny studio is not to be overlooked. Favorite offerings include aerial yoga, $5 community classes and stiff guys yoga for men only. Give a class a try! Owner Jayne also teaches regularly.

Adolph & Kalkstein ChiropracticYou may have spotted Dr. Blake and Dr. Jeff at our store leading an injury clinic. When they’re not treating local runners at Charm City Run, they’re at their pratice in Towson helping others in the local community – including Baltimore professional athletes.

Lifestrength Phsyical Therapy – This Towson-based team of physical therapists and doctors will help get you up and running in no time! Dr. Brett Clark and PT Marica Benda are runners themselves, so you may have spotted them training on the roads of Timonium!
