From 5K to 26.2: Finding My Rhythm with Charm City Run

I started training with Charm City Run in January 2025, joining the Shamrock 5K group with Coach Jaci. From day one, everyone was so welcoming. I got hooked immediately. I was coming back to running after a long break, and those early miles were tough — my feet and shins hurt after almost every run. Coach Jaci taught me how to manage the pain, build strength, and stay consistent.

Some of our runs were at the Carver track when it was under 20°F. Those frigid evenings toughened me up fast and gave me a whole new appreciation for summer running — even that brutally hot one we had. At the time, my longest run was a 5K. Since then, I’ve signed up for longer races (three half marathons so far) and joined more training groups. I’ve been with Coach Dawn’s half marathon group since the middle of last year, and I absolutely love my friends and support team. I’ve done so much more with them than I ever imagined. Now I’m training for my first full marathon in December.

My favorite Charm City Run race so far is the Charles Street 12. I love running through the city — the energy, the support, and the chance to see Baltimore in a way you don’t normally get to.

Right now, I’m running in the Brooks Glycerin 23. Finding the right shoe has been a journey, but these have been great for me. I had to size up more than expected, but once I did, they became incredibly comfortable for long runs.

If you’re new to running, just keep going. It’s hard at first, but once you find your rhythm, it becomes freeing. Strength training and sticking to your coach’s plan make a huge difference. And don’t skip rest days — they’re part of the process. Walking is a strategy, too. You don’t have to run every step to finish strong; interval methods can make running more enjoyable and surprisingly fast. When you enjoy it, you’re more likely to come back.

Most importantly, encourage others and appreciate the people who support you. We are stronger together.
