Podcast interview by Nicky Tamberrino of Maybe Running Will Help

Life is often a journey of unexpected turns, challenges, and triumphs. Scott Kelly’s story is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the power of community. His path, marked by battles with addiction, a surprising love for running, and a fight against cancer, has led him to a place where he not only finds joy in life but also inspires others as a trail-running coach. Here’s a glimpse into Scott’s remarkable journey.

The Beginning: Finding a New Path

When Scott Kelly reflects on who he is, he describes himself with three simple but profound words: easy-going, generous, and unique. These traits have carried him through some of the most challenging times in his life. Scott’s journey began at a 5K race at Towson University in 2013. At the time, life was fairly okay for Scott, and he wasn’t yet facing serious issues with alcoholism. The race was a fun experience, and while it didn’t immediately signal a life-changing moment, it did introduce Scott to the joy and community that running could offer—a foundation that would become crucial in the years to come.

Running Towards a Better Life

Scott’s early running experiences were intertwined with his struggle with alcohol. He hoped that running might be the key to overcoming his addiction. However, as he candidly admits, running alone wasn’t the solution. It wasn’t until he hit rock bottom, sought help, and entered rehab that he truly began his recovery. During rehab, Scott joined a Charm City Run training group, marking the beginning of a new chapter. This group not only helped him physically but also provided the community support he desperately needed.

The Power of Community

Scott’s involvement with Charm City Run was transformative. He found himself surrounded by people who supported and encouraged him, not just in running but in life. This community played a crucial role in his recovery and his eventual emergence as a coach. Scott’s passion for running grew, and he began to explore more challenging races, eventually moving from 5Ks to marathons and ultra marathons. His first marathon, followed just three weeks later by his first ultra marathon, was a testament to his determination and spirit.

Facing New Challenges: Cancer and Beyond

Just as Scott was hitting his stride with running, life threw another curveball: a diagnosis of stage four non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This news could have been devastating, but Scott approached it with the same resilience that had carried him through his battle with addiction. He embraced the diagnosis with radical acceptance, focusing on what he could control and trusting the process of treatment.

Throughout his treatment, the running community continued to rally around him, offering support, companionship, and encouragement. Scott’s ability to remain positive and focused during this time is a reflection of the inner strength he cultivated through his running journey.

A New Role: Coaching and Giving Back

Today, Scott is a trail-running coach with Charm City Run, where he leads groups of runners through the challenges of trail running and ultra-marathon training. His approach to coaching is deeply influenced by his own experiences. He encourages his runners to embrace the unpredictability of the trails and to find joy in the journey, regardless of the obstacles they might face.

For Scott, running has been more than just a sport; it’s been a path to self-discovery, healing, and community. His story is a powerful reminder that no matter where you start, with the right mindset and support, you can achieve incredible things.

Conclusion: The Journey Continues

Scott Kelly’s journey from addiction to ultra-marathon coaching is a story of resilience, community, and transformation. His experiences have shaped him into a person who not only overcomes challenges but also helps others find their own path to healing and growth. As Scott continues to run, coach, and inspire, he embodies the belief that “maybe running will help” us all get more comfortable with ourselves and the world around us.
