Craig started back into running to just shy of 5 years ago, and has worked hard to find his way to finishing his 1st marathon this past spring. Despite the well known "bonk" at mile 20, he is eager to come back for more. While training for his next marathon, Marine Corp in October, he always finds a way to soak up the simplicity of running with friends while also getting in his "me time."
This month we showcase a Mom that truly captivates the essence of Supermom. Raising 4 teenage girls and homeschooling her youngest she still manages to find time to run and run well! When you talk to this Mom she is humble, kind, sweet, sincere and you would have no clue that she finishes in the top 5 female at nearly every race she runs. This supermom began running ultras about 3 years ago and has surely made her podium appearance, even while overcoming and recovering a serious foot surgery last year she still manages to bring home the trophy. With a recent 1st female finish at Gunpowder Keg Ultra 50k in 5:42 and a 1st female win at Seneca Greenway Trail in 5:48, this Mom’s determination and grace shines as she gracefully glides along the trails. If you haven’t guessed already who this Supermom is, we present to you Elaine Greisbach as your May - Runner of the Month.
This runner of the month is someone you can see around Frederick pushing his beloved orange stroller (and son, of course). Javier Montenegro has never shied away from a challenge. Conquering different distance triathlons to pushing an extra 55 lbs of baby + stroller up and down the “rolling hills” of Frederick. He is always ready to help fellow runners who have lovingly nicknamed him Coach Javier. Although Javier has had a rough couple of months with the cancer diagnosis of his father, he has found an appreciation and love for the trails and running family who continue to help him through the difficult times.
This month we showcase a very special runner from our Frederick community. She has taken on running in a variety of distances from 5Ks to 50miles. When she is not taking on a new challenge she's actively involved in the community and great running partner to many. We present to you Michelle Mitchell as your January Runner of the Month!
The beauty about this runner is how truly humble he is in this sport. If you talk to him post-race it’s almost like he is still shocking himself with these finishing times. He has found the magic potion to juggle family life, work and training to not only complete some of the toughest races on the east coast but dominate them! It is our honor to introduce to you, David Welch, a loving father of 3 boys, husband and friend to many as our November Runner of the Month.
This month we showcase a staple to the Frederick running community. We almost guarantee he has either directed you to make a turn on any local race or was cheering you on as you run through the finish line. Our October ROTM, radiates with his love for running and has found several unique ways to share his passion and knowledge with the community. He is humble, genuine and truly cares to help everyone be the best they can been in the healthiest way possible. To calculate the hours he spends volunteering at races and teaching workshops, we would imagine would be close to a full time job. In addition to his impact on the community he is a loving father, husband, friend and mentor to many. If you don’t already know who we talking about, we present to you Mark Lawrence as our October Runner of the Month.
This month it was almost a no-brainer who we should showcase for the month of September, Jim Treece a truly respectable and humble runner in the Frederick area. Most of you who frequent the trail scene may know of Jim but what you don't know he has finished over 41 ultras and 11 of those are 100 mile finishes. One of the great characteristics about Jim is he simply runs for one reason, for fun!
Lisa Johnston a mother of 6, a friend to many, dog lover and an ultrarunning fanatic. A runner that recently pulled off a stellar performance at the C & O 100 winning first female in a whopping time of 21:38. With 5 -100 mile finishes (and many more to come in ’15) she exudes excellence in the Frederick ultrarunning community.
This month we highlight a runner that has and continues to impact the lives of many in the Frederick running community. A runner, like many, that has experienced his own challenges when first starting in this crazy sport. A runner that truly caught “the bug” and can’t stop, or shall I say won’t stop.
This month's Runner of the Month happens to be a good friend and an idol of mine. I have been running with this guy since moving to Frederick a little over 3 years ago. Better yet,
I’ve been trying to keep up with him! I was hooked up with “Dobson” for my first trip out in
the “Shed.” I informed him that I was looking for good 16 mile run. As any good respectable ultrarunner would, he tried to kill me with all that the “Dark side” had to offer in 16 miles.
On that day, 13 miles was all I could take.
