Coach: David Welch

David ran his first race at the 2004 Edinburgh, Scotland 10K and his first marathon in Barcelona, Spain in 2006 but it wasn’t until moving to Frederick in 2011 that he began racing more regularly. It was also in Frederick where David discovered ultra running, completing his first Catoctin 50K in 2013. He has since completed over 35 ultra distance races, including seven 100-mile races.

David began coaching in 2015, after receiving his RRCA coaching certification. Since then, he has coached athletes of all abilities training for 5K PRs to 200 mile races, last person standing backyard ultras, and everything in between. But his passion lies with helping runners conquer ultra distance races, particularly those on the beautiful trails of Frederick.

In addition to his coaching certification, David has a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology, a certificate in plant-based nutrition, and is currently Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder at Synthesis Capital, an investment manager created to transform our food system through food technology.

Coach: Kristen Watkins

In March of 2009 a friend encouraged me to start running, I signed up for the Frederick half marathon with only 6 weeks to train, I battled through the distance and my passion for running began. The next 9 years I was a pretty causal runner, not too focused on improvement, but more on the social aspect and getting outside.

I was part of a local running club and there was a group of women that I really wanted to be able to keep up with, but I just could not run that fast, I also enjoyed running with my kids, but again they were getting faster and I was not. I had put on quite a bit of weight and my pace continued to get slower and slower.

I began strength training with a goal of losing weight and being able to run at a faster pace. Over the next 3 years I lost over 35 pounds and improved my pace pretty significantly (it is key to have multiple paces). I have fallen in love with speed workouts and strength training. When I am not out running you can likely find me at the gym obsessing over squats or deadlifting. I also believe that nutrition is the base to performance, and you will often hear me say “eat for what you are going to do!”

My favorite runs are with my daughter, while she is still faster than I am we always have a blast, and it is never a dull moment, not to mention we take the best & goofiest selfies at the end of every training session. This has created so many memories for us that it has just enhanced my passion for running.

I have a goal of wanting to be able to qualify for the NSGA when I turn 50 (only a few more years!) as well as run my first marathon next year.

I am very excited to be able to be part of the coaching team at Charm City Run and help others to meet their goals. I love to pour into people through positivity and help them find the path to achieving what they want as well as being able to learn from others to better myself.

Description

At Charm City Run our goal is to safely train runners towards reaching their goals of finishing your first ultra, achieving PR and everything in between. The power of the group atmosphere makes the journey fun and enjoyable while encouragement from your coaches makes the long runs much easier.

Each group will meet twice a week for 16 weeks for runs and learn about hydration, trail running, easy runs, recovery runs, hydration, nutrition, injury prevention and much more along the way. Weekday runs will consist of hills and track workouts. Weekend morning runs will be trail runs at local parks, unless weather forces us to stay on the roads.

The groups will be targeting Rocky Gap 25K, 50K, Relay Trail Run on Saturday, October 13th or the Patapsco Valley 50K on Saturday, October 19th, or any other race within that time frame

To safely meet your goal of the 50K, we do ask that you have completed at least one marathon distance and have a strong base level of trail running under your belt.
