Finding My Stride: How the Charm CityRun Race Team Changed My Life

By: Samantha Reynolds, 2025 and 2026 Charm City Run Race Team Member

When I first joined the Charm City Run Race Team, I was just getting into running. I
wasn’t the kind of person who grew up loving cross-country or logging miles for fun. In
fact, the idea of joining a structured running group felt equal parts exciting and
intimidating. I imagined people who already knew what they were doing — runners with
experience, confidence, and perfect form — while I was still figuring out how to pace
myself and wondering if I even belonged. What I didn’t expect was how deeply the
experience would impact me. I thought I was simply signing up to get in better shape,
maybe learn a few training tips, and challenge myself a little. Instead, joining the team
became one of the most meaningful decisions I’ve made. It opened the door to new
friendships, helped me push limits I didn’t know I had, and introduced me to a
community that made running feel less overwhelming and a whole lot more rewarding.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
Like many others, I tend to stick to what I know. It’s easier that way. It feels safe. But safe
doesn’t always make us better. Safe rarely helps us grow. And safe certainly doesn’t bring new
friendships into our lives.

Joining the race team was one of the first times I intentionally pushed myself into something
new. I didn’t know anyone when I started. I didn’t know what to expect. Would everyone be
faster than me? Would I fit in? Would I be able to keep up? These thoughts crossed my mind
more times than I can count.

But what I quickly learned is that the Charm City Run community thrives on openness and
support. No one cares how fast you are. No one expects you to have the perfect stride or the
perfect race plan. They just want you to show up — and they’ll cheer for you every time you do.
Taking that first step into a completely new environment wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth
it. Within just a few weeks, I found myself talking to people I wouldn’t have met otherwise and
forming connections I never expected.

The Friendships That Carried Me Forward
What I love most about this team is how genuine the people are. Charm City Run isn’t just a
group of runners — it’s a family. It’s a collection of people who care about each other’s progress,
goals, and even struggles. They celebrate personal wins, big or small. They show up to support
you on race day. They ask how your training is going, even when they know you skipped a run
or two. There’s no judgment — just encouragement.

I never expected running to be the bridge that connected me to new friendships, but here I am:
surrounded by people who inspire me, challenge me, and make me laugh during those early-morning miles when I’d normally be half asleep. I’ve shared miles with teammates who are chasing PRs and others who are simply trying to get stronger or healthier. We all come from different backgrounds and we all have different goals, yet somehow, we move together.

There is something uniquely bonding about the miles you spend side-by-side with someone. You
talk about life, work, struggles, accomplishments, hopes, and whatever random thoughts pop into
your head somewhere between mile 4 and mile 8. You see people at their best and their tired,
sweaty worst — and it only makes the connection stronger.

That’s the magic of this team: it turns strangers into running partners, and running partners into
friends.

Pushing Past Limits I Didn’t Know I Had
If Charm City Run has taught me anything, it’s that I’m capable of far more than I realized. The
training plans, the group runs, the accountability — they all push you in the best possible ways.
There’s something powerful about running with others who are working toward their own goals.
You can feel the energy. You can feel the motivation. And before you know it, you’re pushing
yourself harder, too.

On days when running alone would’ve led to a shorter or slower run, the team kept me going.
There’s a kind of unspoken agreement: “We’re doing this together.” Whether it’s speed work,
hills, tempo runs, or long miles on a Saturday morning, the group atmosphere brings a level of
effort you just can’t replicate Solo.

I credit the team for helping me improve not only my pace and endurance, but my mindset.
Running became less about doubting myself and more about seeing what I could do next. I found
a confidence I didn’t expect. I learned to embrace challenges instead of avoiding them. And I
learned that the people around you can elevate you in ways you can’t always achieve alone.

More Than Running — A Supportive Community
What makes Charm City Run and the race team so special is that it’s more than a store or a group
of people. It’s a culture. It’s a community built on positivity, support, and inclusivity. Everyone
belongs, everyone matters, and everyone is celebrated — whether you’re running a marathon or
signing up for your very first 5K.

Events, group runs, team photos, inside jokes, shared sweat, shared victories — they all make the
experience so much richer. And as you become part of that culture, you start to feel like you’re
part of something bigger than yourself.

Charm City Run made me feel seen. It made me feel part of a team that lifts each other up. And
at a time when I needed connection, confidence, and a renewed belief in myself, it provided all
of that and more.

Looking Ahead With Gratitude
As I reflect on my time with the race team, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful that I took the
leap. Grateful for the people I’ve met. Grateful for the confidence I’ve gained. And grateful for
every single mile that brought me closer to where I am now.

Charm City Run didn’t just make me a stronger runner — it made me a more connected, more
motivated, and more open person. It gave me friendships, memories, and goals I’m excited to
chase. And it reminded me that sometimes the best things in life happen when you step out of
your comfort zone and say “yes.”

I’m already looking forward to the next season, the next challenge, and the next set of miles
shared with some truly incredible people.

Because now I know: running isn’t just about the finish line — it’s about who you become on the way there.
